To put an end to your curiosity, just check out all our suggestions below. We’re sure you’ll find some very interesting HBO Max movies, so check it out!
1. Joker
To start our list, we have to recommend The Joker, a very successful flick that was praised by the public and critics. It tells one of the possible origins of the iconic villain in the Batman universe, but with a more realistic feel and without getting so caught up in the style of other movies based on comic books. So don’t expect the same kind of action content that we’ve had in Marvel movies over the past few years, for example. Actor Joaquin Phoenix’s performance is also another highly praised point and is worth watching, even if you are not that interested in the themes of the film or in the character itself.
2. Wonder Woman 1984
Moving on with another film based on the world of comics, we have Wonder Woman 1984, which follows a totally different style. This is a more relaxed movie that can please those who are used to the now classic style of comic book movies, with a lot of action and a dash of comedy. This is the direct sequel to the movie that came out in 2017, even though it has a lighter plot that barely follows up the events of that movie. The best part is that it just came out so it’s a great watch for anyone looking for something new among the HBO Max movies’ catalogue.
3. The Conjuring 2
There’s no doubt that the The Conjuring franchise is one of the best for those who love horror movies. Fortunately, you can take this opportunity to watch the sequel to the original movie on HBO Max right now. This movie follows a similar style to its predecessor. You’ll be there with the couple Ed and Lorraine Warren dealing with a supernatural affair that plagues a family in the United States. The movie even has some more jumpscares than the first one, but it’s still a lot of fun and worth checking out.
4. Ocean’s 8
Considered a spin-off to the original trilogy, Ocean’s 8 is a lot of fun and has the same formula as the other films. The difference is that the main cast is all female, which brings some different nuances to the plot. For those who haven’t seen the movie yet, it’s really worth it, as it’s a great way to spend time with an easy watch. It’s great for fans of thrillers.
5. Godzilla
There are a lot of Godzilla movies out there, but what you’ll find on HBO Max is the American piece released in 2014. It’s a good watch, as it comes at least a little closer to the themes we saw in the Japanese monster movies. Considering that the Godzilla vs King Kong sequel just came out, now is a great time to give this one a watch. It’s one of the most fun HBO Max movies!
6. The Founder
Ever wanted to know more about the origins of the most famous fast food chain in the world? The movie The Founder shows how an entrepreneur found McDonald’s and acted in a less-than-nice way to take control away from the original founders. Of course there are a lot of fictional parts in the movie, but overall it tries to be faithful to the real events. It’s quite worth it for those who haven’t watched it yet.
7. Harry Potter
You may find it odd to see just the name of the Harry Potter franchise among our HBO Max movie suggestions, but there’s a reason for that. The streaming service accounts for all the movies in the series, so you can watch them in sequence or in any order you prefer. If you like, there is also the Fantastic Animals spin-off in the catalogue. It’s great news for fans of the franchise or for those who have always wanted to watch it.
8. The Shining
Next, we have to recommend a great classic that currently is part of the HBO Max movies’ catalogue. The Shining is one of those movies that everyone should see, even if they aren’t such horror or suspense fans. It’s based on Stephen King’s eponymous book, but many elements end up being quite different, mostly to make it work better as a movie. It shows the Torrance family going to spend the winter in the Overlook Hotel, which needs to be taken care of during this closed-off season. Unfortunately, some supernatural situations end up influencing Jack Torrence to commit horrible actions against his family.
9. Doctor Sleep
Since we recommended The Shining, there’s no reason not to recommend Doctor Sleep, which is basically a sequel. Of course, it’s not exactly considered the sequel to the Stanley Kubrick-directed film, but it’s based on the book that follows Stephen King’s work. It shows Jack Torrance’s son decades after what happened at the hotel, and his still ongoing trauma caused by these events. It’s a very interesting movie, although it’s not as iconic as the Kubrick adaptation.
10. The Imitation Game
One of the HBO Max movies that many people can enjoy is The Imitation Game. It tells the story of Alan Turing back in the year 1939, when he was still a student at Cambridge University. He is recruited by British intelligence to study Nazi codes and eventually build a machine to decipher them. Despite this great achievement, authorities revealed his homosexuality to the world in 1952, which makes his life extremely difficult. The film was even criticized for not being so accurate to reality, but it’s still worth checking out.
11. Gravity
Gravity is another good pick for those looking for HBO Max movies. In this movie, we follow an engineer and an astronaut on a space mission together. All goes well until they are hit by high-speed space debris. The consequences of the impact leave them with no communication with Earth and they need to find a way back home. The movie can be very tense, but that’s what makes it so good.
12. Training Day
Another suggestion we can give is Training Day, which is another extremely popular and well-known movie. It shows police officer Jake Hoyt on his first day on the job after a transfer to the narcotics division. He is assigned to partner up with a veteran cop, who makes his first day hell. As situations get complicated throughout the day, Jake must find a way to get rid of the accusations and traps set by his partner.
13. King’s Speech
King’s Speech is a very interesting movie and it is based on some real facts about King George VI, who had speech problems. To communicate perfectly with his country, he ends up turning to a speech therapist who promises to help him overcome his stutter. They become great friends and, through unconventional means, the King really manages to improve his stutter. This endeavor becomes even more important when he has to deliver a speech to the UK during World War II. If you are looking for war movies to watch, look no further.
14. The Departed
Directed by Martin Scorsese, The Departed is one of the HBO Max movies that we most recommend for those who like dramas with a touch of humor and suspense. It follows intertwined plot showing a cop undercover in the mafia and a criminal undercover in the police. The two men suffer from the problems caused by the double life, which is aggravated when the mafia and the police realize that there are infiltrators around. For those who haven’t seen the movie, it’s quite worth the watch.
15. Interview with the Vampire
We also suggest you check out Interview with the Vampire. The feature was very successful in its release, so it is quite possible that you have heard about it or its eponymous book. It tells the story of three vampires living across different times. All of this is told from the point of view of one of the vampires, who is being interviewed by a journalist who has decided to listen to his story to find out if it’s all real.
16. 2001: A Space Odyssey
It’s a little difficult to explain the plot of 2001: A Space Odyssey, as it’s a much better experience to watch without knowing too much about the movie. In general, we can say that you will follow the mysterious mission of a group of astronauts. They encounter some problems along the way, especially because of their computers. You could say that there is a greater conflict between humans and machines, but you can draw your own conclusions when you see the movie.
17. Singin’ in the Rain
Even those who are not so fond of musicals need to watch Singin’ in the Rain. Luckily, this is one of the HBO Max movies available for you to watch, so here’s your chance to see it for the first time or to see it again if you’re a fan of the work. It focuses on two silent movie stars who need to overcome the industry’s difficulties in transitioning to talking movies. Even after so many decades, the film is still a lot of fun to watch.
18. Casablanca
Although it’s a great movie classic, there are many people who haven’t seen Casablanca yet. Even though it is a very old film, it manages to have a good pace and interesting plot able to grasp the attention of those who are used to seeing more current cinema. The plot takes place during World War II, around the same time the film was actually filmed, and shows an American exile who runs a nightclub in the city of Casablanca. In this place, he reencounters an old girlfriend who is now married to a man persecuted by the Nazis. He has to decide whether to help them escape or try to rekindle his romance with the woman.
19. A Clockwork Orange
Another classic that is among the HBO Max movies is Clockwork Orange, another one directed by Stanley Kubrick. The film is based on the book of same name that was adapted very faithfully in this cinematographic work. The plot follows teenager Alex, who perpetrates atrocities to any innocent he meets in front of his group of friends. Saying more than that would spoil some of the movies’ most shocking and iconic moments.
20. Moonlight
For those who don’t know, Moonlight was not only very successful but also won several awards. The film follows the life of the main character throughout his childhood, adolescence and adult life. Meanwhile, the movie explores the difficulties in facing his sexuality and identity, as well as dealing with the physical and emotional abuse he experienced while growing up. Easily a great watch for people who are into well-crafted dramas.
21. Speed Racer
If you were a fan of the old Speed Racer anime, the movie that is available on HBO Max is well worth a look. It has a very vibrant and different style, which generated some negative reviews at the time of its release. Still, it’s a ton of fun if you are into movies with interesting visuals!
22. Matrix
Even though it was released so long ago, the Matrix trilogy is still very modern today. During the films, we see Neo and his companions doing their best to combat the computer network that created a virtual reality in which humans live and don’t know. There are those who don’t like much the second film, but overall it’s a trilogy that is well worth checking out. Even more so since a new movie will be released in the future!
23. The Lord of the Rings
If you’re a fan of the work of J. R. R. Tolkien, you can’t miss the trilogy based on the author’s books. Unlike many book adaptations, these films do their best to deliver flawless results. In these movies, we accompany Frodo’s journey (and many other characters, of course) to destroy the One Ring. It’s hard to summarize the entire adventure, but we guarantee that it’s an experience that’s worth even for those who haven’t read the books.
24. You’ve Got Mail
Then we have a lighter film in our list for those who love romantic comedies. You’ve Got Mail was filmed in the late 1990s, when the internet was still becoming popular around the world. Under this pretext, we see a man and woman communicating via e-mail after meeting each other in a random chat room. Since they don’t share names or other personal details, they have no idea they are professional rivals. We guarantee that it is a very fun movie and that it reminds us of a time when the internet was simpler than it is today.
25. Citizen Kane
To round off our list of HBO Max movies, we have none other than Citizen Kane. Considered for many years the best film ever made in Hollywood, it is clear that today it does not have the same impact on those who have never seen it. But it’s nice to know that it was quite revolutionary for its time and inspired the movie industry to be what it is today. The movie itself is still pretty good, but it’s worth going in knowing that it’s much slower than movies today.
